But overall the mighty leghorn is most probably the best for egg production.

Maran Chickens

If you want a novelty egg and shock your friends and neighbours, then look no further to the Maran Chicken, these maran hens lay dark brown eggs, and they have speckles on them too.

These lovely birds are heavier set and quite placid compared to the leghorn for instance. They are also good layers and fit very well into a backyard chicken coop.

And what do you want with backyard chickens? A friend, a pet chicken has proved themselves to be a good pet to all and just as cheeky as any other pet.

Don’t look past the Maran chicken if you want something different, and you will find a good friend in the Maran hen…

I cannot say about the rooster as I have not had one but if you are deciding to get a Maran rooster as well.

Give it a damn good try to befriend him, you might be surprised.

However, you might have to look around for this breed of chicken as they are not as common as other breeds of chickens to buy.

The Orpington chicken is not only one of the more placid and loving chicken breeds, they are also good layers as well.

It is the brown eggs they lay and plenty of them.
